Happy Holidays to Our TLC Families!!

As we begin this holiday season, we would like to thank all of our parents for generously donating supplies for our Thanksgiving feast. It was a great time.

We would also like to thank our wonderful families for selling items from our Yankee Candle Fundraiser. We raised $800 that will be put towards updating our flooring in the classrooms.

The staff at TLC are anticipating a fun-filled month of preparation for the upcoming holidays. The children will learn about all the many holidays we celebrate in December. They will discover how families celebrate around the world. They will also explore a winter wonderland.

Our annual Tree lighting spectacular will be December 5th promptly at 5:00. Our crew put a ton of work into prepping this beautiful light show. Please join us for hot chocolate and goodies as we light up our school in a dazzling display.

We will be closed at 12pm on December 24th and December 25th in observance of Christmas. We will be closed at 5:00 on December 31 and closed January 1st for New Year’s Day observance. We will have a sign up on the bulletin board so parents can let us know their holiday plans. This really helps so we can staff accordingly.

Each classroom will have a small celebration in their classrooms on December 19th. Santa will be visiting from 3:30-5:30 pm, as you pick up your child you can visit Santa with your family and take a photo. Santa brings a sack full of toys for all good girls and boys. As in the past, each parent brings in a gift in advance to be given by Santa. The pre-wrapped gift can be brought at any time before the 17th.

Outdoor play is an essential part of your children’s day. Please remember to bring in mittens, hats, boots, snow pants, a warm jacket, and boots. Slippers are also suggested as they keep our feet toasty warm and our carpets clean and dry. Please label ALL items. We tend to get duplicate boots and ski pants etc. Storing them in a recycle bag to hang on their hook is very helpful. Thank you!

Please remember to have your access key card at all times when entering the building. Access keys are only allowed to be used during TLC scheduled business hours. If you are having an alternative person picking up please remember to give them a key. We understand the occasional missing key but it is important to have it with you at all times.

Clubhouse

Hi everyone,

We hope all our TLC families had a great Thanksgiving! The Clubhouse enjoyed the Thanksgiving Feast on Wednesday.  Thanks to all who donated to help make the feast a success. November was a fun month for us, we took a sensory walk to Elmwood School and set up sensory tables in class for the children to test their senses.

We took another walk to Elmwood School to find walking sticks, which we then decorated, we discussed what the children were learning about the Pilgrims and Native Americans in school while also making some fun related crafts. This week our theme is Community helpers, and as we enter December our themes will be Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Fairytales.

I’m looking forward to a fun month ahead, I hope the children are too. Just a reminder that coats, hats and gloves are needed to go outside, it has become very chilly and we do get out to play for a bit after the children get off the bus and have a snack. Thank you everyone and have a great December!

Karate Classes at TLC Teaches Discipline and Safety

Villari’s Martial Arts is an enrichment program at TLC that offers children the ability to learn self-defense techniques, improve coordination, hone reflexes, develop self-confidence, and increase self-discipline. Each class is taught by Christine, a certified black belt instructor, whose mission is to provide you with the highest quality martial arts training where each individual can reach their personal goals.

One parent recently asked their children, “What do you do if a stranger talks to you or tries to take you?” The children are part of Christine’s karate class and the answer – without hesitation – was remarkable: “Christine said that it is unlikely to happen, but if it does, we use our karate techniques to get away and say to others teach us this too! Christine says, don’t yell, because others might think we’re just throwing  a tantrum but instead say, “This is not my Mom or Dad”. Even parents learn something new!

Do your children know the proper techniques to protect themselves or get away, if necessary?

This post is not to install fear by any means. More importantly, it is to showcase that karate is a positive experience to enhance self-defense and safety for your children in so many ways. At TLC’s program, Christine and TLC present karate to children as a body, mind, and spirit practice. And it’s also fun! The mental and physical elements of karate improve their fitness, concentration and coordination. The children also learn age appropriate skills for dealing with bullying and other forms of violence.

TLC’s karate program through Villari’s is committed to maintaining a culture of discipline, cooperation, and respect where your children can practice asserting themselves, taking on leadership, working as part of a team, and solving conflicts non-violently, while they become fit and learn skills to keep themselves safe. Jousting just might be their favorite as well as yelling the karate commands loudly!

Throughout its history, TLC has supported the development of martial arts and personal safety curricula for children. Karate enhances this. Together, TLC and Villari’s provide learning experiences that are age and developmentally appropriate. The spirit building and non-competitive environment enable every child to be proud of doing their best and feel successful with their effort. Earning a new belt is also a sign of progress and something the children are very proud of.

If you are interested in enrolling your child(ren) in karate at TLC, please speak to Trish, Jen or Melissa. A typical class begins and ends with a bow to Christine, the master. After a warm-up, students practice the art’s particular skills, which may include kicks, punches, and blocks. Each requires concentration and strict attention. Experts say that it is the respect kids learn, whether from bowing or standing still and waiting for the next command, that can be the most important benefit and it carries over into school, helping to improve behavior and even grades.

(Karate at TLC is on Tuesdays and a great way to have your children exert some extra energy!!)
